Critical reflection

3.2.1: Through out the module, I have gained useful insight to improve my writing and analytical thinking. Notably, I was introduced to the Paul Elder framework, which I found to be extremely useful during the various tasks for this module. This module also further solidified my understanding and use of the PEEL framework and made me realise how versatile and easily applicable it is. Next, I understood the format and requirements for referencing in APA style, which allows me to easily display my sources in a standardised manner. Other tools such as the “Ideal gap and goal” framework allowed me to analyse a problem with more clarity, and construct a good problem statements that can be easily linked to the problem solution. When it comes to presentations skills, I understand my weaknesses and I can avoid making the same mistakes in the future. I learn to be more expressive using body gestures and maintaining eye contact to engage the audience. However, I still need to learn how to be mor...

Project Contributions

Contributions to the technical report: Project idea and direction: Googled popular body cooling devices, shortlisted the top few. Googled Singapore based construction companies to decide on stakeholders Dedicated task allocation Discussed and finalised problem solution Came up with general schematic idea for proposed solution, discussed with group fan placements and implementation of power source Report content: Prompted ChatGPT to generate a transmittal letter with the context of our project. Added section 2. Proposed solution. Added section 2.1 Optimised power source. Prompted ChatGPT to list benefits of portable power banks and implemented it into solution. Prompted google benefits of type C USB cables. Added section 2.2 Addition of inlet fans. Googled Bernoullis' principle to aid in enhancing cooling effect. Linking idea back to Kuchofuku Japanese jacket, finalising on optimal inlet fan placement at the side of device near users waist Added section 2.3 Implementation of Mesh Sa...

Assignment 1 Readers response

The Boeing 787 Dreamliners iconic curved wings are one of many aviation achievements (Boeing, 2010). Spanning 60 meters, these massive wings can lift up to 227,950kg. They include all standard flight control systems such as ailerons, flaps, slats and spoilers, as well as, some advanced mechanisms such as gust suppression and load alleviation. The 787’s wings are unique due to the fact that they can bend considerably. According to Hardiman (2020), this feature is intentional to provide a smoother ride for passengers. Additionally, the use of composite materials allows the wings to achieve their length, without compromising strength. Hirst (2008) reported that carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), was used extensively due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. Unlike many other aircraft wings, the 787’s wings do not feature winglets. Instead, Boeing developed a new device known as raked wingtips which acts both as an improvement of winglets by increasing the aspect ratio...

Initial Research Pathway

The team used Google to find top commercial aircrafts The team utilized ChatGPT to compare Boeing 787 and Airbus 350, choosing the former The team utilized ChatGPT to find out the features and function of Boeing 787 with the prompt list out the features and function of Boeing 787 Dreamliner wing. The team utilized Google search engine to understand Boeing 787 variants.  The team went through the Boeing website to find out more about the specifications of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Used Chatgpt to list down features of the Boeing 787 wing, compared it to a traditional wing Filtered out 2 main differences: material used and wingtip devices Prompted Chatgpt for more information about composite materials and CFRP Googled articles for composite material definition Used keywords "composite materials" "CFRP" on google scholar for applications and benefits in aviation use Googled for effects and functions of different wingtip devices (raked vs blended) Used google scholar t...

Letter of self-introduction

Dear Professor Brad, I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Rex Tan, and I am a student from your Effective Communication module. This letter contains my academic journey, my strengths and weaknesses in communications, as well as my goals for this module. I hope after reading this letter you would be able to learn something about me. I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a diploma in Aerospace Engineering. Like many other engineering students, I have an interest mathematics and physics. I gain a sense of satisfaction when problem solving, and the process of obtaining the right answer after many lines of workings feels extremely rewarding. Engineering is a platform where I can put my skills to good use and make a positive impact. Additionally, I used to think that in the field of engineering, one does not require good presentation skills as most of our work would be with machines. Being an introverted and shy person, I found that to be a perfect fit for me, but how the t...

Interpretation of quote

“Communication skills are an essential component in the education of engineering students to facilitate not just students’ education but also to prepare them for their future careers.” As engineers, our brilliant ideas and hard work will be all for naught if they are left unheard. Effective communication is crucial as it allows people to voice their opinions, enables collaboration and thus allowing us to improve on our work. Having strong communication skills is just as important as having the technical knowledge behind our study.
